What is respite?

Behavioral health respite services is a planned, short break for children/youth and their parents/guardians from each other. The purpose of this break is to provide temporary relief to the primary caregiver of an OhioRISE plan enrolled youth, with the goal of keeping the family together long-term.

Why do I want to do this?

Respite care can give parents/guardians of children with significant behavioral health needs a chance to relieve stress, renew their energy, and promote balance in their daily lives. It can also prevent the parent/guardian’s exhaustion, isolation, or burn out. Whether it’s just for a few hours a week or an extended break, respite care can provide parent/guardians more time to take care of themselves and other
responsibilities so they can be their best selves when parenting their child. When they are reunited with their child, they are rested and better equipped to meet the child’s needs.

When would I provide respite care?

The respite service may be provided on a planned or emergency basis. An emergency respite service may be provided to address either the parent/guardian’s unexpected need for a break or to address an urgent need related to the youth’s behavioral health diagnosis; emergency respite is used in response to safety concerns with the goal of keeping all members of the family safe and healthy. Respite services may be provided either during normal awake hours or overnight. The respite provider will be awake when the youth is awake during.

Where can I provide respite services?

• A qualifying provider’s place of residence when approved by the youth’s legal guardian
• A foster home licensed by ODJFS

• In a treatment foster home certified by ODJFS
• A community setting in which the general public has access
